Kinkakuji (金閣寺, Golden Pavilion)


The Golden Pavilion ( Kinkakuji : Kin for Gold and kuji for Pavilion ) is the most famous building of Japan, it's is a Zen temple located in the north of Kyoto. It's a three-floor building whose top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf.
The temple was villa of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu after his retire, and it became a Zen temple after his death in 1408.



The phoenix located on top of the roof was designed by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu as a symbol of his own character and status.
